Maintenance Methods for Internal Combustion Forklifts and Electric Forklifts
Nov 27 , 2025
Forklifts are industrial material handling vehicles, referring to various wheeled handling vehicles used for loading, unloading, stacking, and short-distance transportation of palletized goods. Below are maintenance methods for internal combustion forklifts and electric forklifts, which we hope will be helpful.

Secondary Technical Maintenance for Internal Combustion Forklifts and Electric Forklifts

1. Clean all oil tanks, filters, and pipelines, and check for corrosion and cracks. After cleaning, do not wipe with fibrous materials.

2. Clean the torque converter and gearbox, check for wear on parts, and replace the oil.

3. Check the drive shaft bearings and, if necessary, reverse the direction of the universal joint cross shaft.

4. Check the tightness of all parts of the drive axle and for oil leaks. Clear any air vents. Disassemble and inspect the main reducer, differential, and wheel-end reducer, adjust the bearing axial clearance, and add or replace lubricating oil.

5. Disassemble, adjust, and lubricate the front and rear wheel hubs, and rotate the half-shafts. 6. Clean the brakes and adjust the clearance between the brake drum and brake shoe friction pads.

7. Clean the steering system and check the free play of the steering wheel.

8. Disassemble and clean the gear oil pump, paying attention to the condition of the gears, housing, and bearings.

9. Disassemble the multi-way valve and check the clearance between the valve stem and valve body. Do not disassemble the safety valve unless necessary.
10. Check the steering knuckle for damage and cracks, the fit between the steering axle kingpin and the steering knuckle, and inspect the wear of the tie rods and steering arm joints.

11. Remove the tires, remove rust and paint the rims, inspect the inner and outer tires and tire strips, rotate them, and inflate them to the specified pressure.

12. Check the tightness of the handbrake components and adjust the working travel of the handbrake lever and foot brake pedal.

13. Check the specific gravity of the battery electrolyte. If it does not meet the requirements, it must be removed and recharged.

14. Clean the water tank and oil cooler. 15. Inspect the rack and frame for deformation; disassemble and clean the rollers; check the reliability of all attachments and tighten them by welding if necessary.

16. Disassemble and inspect the lifting cylinder, tilting cylinder, and steering cylinder; replace worn seals.

17. Inspect all instrument sensors, fuses, and switches; adjust as necessary.

Level 1 Technical Maintenance for Internal Combustion Forklifts and Battery-Powered Forklifts: Perform the "Routine Maintenance" items, plus the following:

1. Check cylinder pressure or vacuum.

2. Check and adjust valve clearance.

3. Check the thermostat for proper functioning.

4. Check the multi-way directional valve, lifting cylinder, tilting cylinder, steering cylinder, and gear pump for proper functioning.

5. Check the transmission's shifting operation.

6. Check and adjust the clearance between the hand and foot brake pads and brake drums.

7. Change the engine oil in the oil pan, check the crankcase ventilation pipes for damage, and clean the oil filter and diesel filter element.

8. Check that the generator and starter motor are securely installed and that the wiring connections are clean and secure. Check the carbon brushes and commutator for wear.

9. Check the fan belt tension.

10. Check that the wheels are securely installed, that the tire pressure is correct, and remove any debris embedded in the tire treads.

11. After disassembling parts for maintenance, conduct a forklift road test after reassembly.

(1) Braking performance under different conditions should be normal, without deviation or swerving. On steep slopes, the forklift should stop reliably after the handbrake is engaged.

(2) Listen to the engine during acceleration, deceleration, heavy load, or no load for any abnormal noises.

(3) After a road test of a certain mileage, check the brakes, transmission, front axle housing, and gear pump for overheating.

(4) Check that the forklift lifting speed is normal and that there is no vibration.

12. Check the diesel tank oil inlet filter for blockage or damage, and clean or replace the filter.
